Sectors Pages: Support and DocumentationFind help and documentation on each page within the Sectors section using the index below. This documentation explains how each page is set up, with tips on how to best use the information.
Sectors pages on Barchart.com compares and ranks different segments of the market against each other. Within each market segment, the Sectors program compares and ranks all of the stocks within that given segment.
Sector information is only available on active stocks trading on the NYSE, AMEX or Nasdaq, with at least six months (130 trading days), of trading activity, and closing price greater than $1. Ranking of the stocks in each sector is done via Weighted Alpha, which is a rating of growth patterns in a one-year period. The calculation is such that the most recent prices have a higher weighting in the calculation of the Alpha. The higher the Weighted Alpha, the larger the growth. A stock whose price has not changed in the period will have a small Weighted Alpha. A stock whose price has dropped over the year will have a negative Weighted Alpha. The Sectors are updated continually throughout each trading day.
One method of sectoring stocks is by Industry Groups and Major Market Indices—including the Dow Jones Complex, Nasdaq 100 and S&P Indexes.
An industry group
helps you classify stocks in the same type of business for comparison purposes.
The Industry Groups page lists Industries sorted by Weighted Alpha. You'll see the number of stocks contained in the Industry Group. Clicking on a group will open a page showing you all the stocks in that sector. Only those sectors that contain 3 or more stocks will be included on the Industry Groups page. This is done to prevent a single stock from having too great an effect on the ranking of the list. In addition, ETF sector groups only contain ETFs whose leverage is single-long and will exclude ETFs who are short, double-long or triple-long. Site members also have the option to export the data to an Excel spreadsheet or as a .csv file by clicking on the "Export Data" icon Weighted Alpha for Industry Groups is recalculated every 10 minutes. Note: Barchart maintains approximately two years of sector history for charting purposes.
Another method of sectoring stocks is using Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Codes. A SIC Code is a standardized method of classifying a company's type of business (they appear in a company's EDGAR filings). The Industry SIC Codes page ranks two-digit SIC codes (the first two letter of the four-digit code) by Weighted Alpha. Click on the 2-digit code to see all of the four-digit SIC codes, where you can then drill-down to the stocks within each four-digit sector. Only those sectors that contain 3 or more stocks will be included on the Industry SIC Groups page. This is done to prevent a single stock from having too great an effect on the ranking of the list.
You can view a chart of the Weighted Alpha for each sector by clicking on the FlipCharts button. The number of stocks contained within each sector is represented as volume on the charts. Each sector also has links to the Quote, Chart, and Opinions pages.
Weighted Alpha is a measure of how much a stock has risen or fallen over a one-year period. The original research was restricted to large cap stocks, so the corresponding rise in the S&P 500 index was subtracted; however, as there are a number of interesting stocks that do not fit well into any category, and others that fit into more than one category, the results are presented without subtracting any index.
Barchart.com takes this Alpha (measure of how much a stock has changed in the one-year period) and weights this, assigning more weight to recent activity, and less (0.5 factor) to activity at the beginning of the period. Thus the weighted alpha is a measure of one year growth with an emphasis on the most recent price activity. A stock whose price has risen over the one-year period will have a positive Weighted Alpha. A stock whose price has not changed in the period will have a small Weighted Alpha and a stock whose price has dropped over the period will have a negative Weighted Alpha. Note: The Weighted Alpha is limited in the amount it may change from one day to the next, thus eliminating large price jumps from the calculation.
