Cattle futures settled $1.07 to $1.52 lower on the day. The Feb 14 contract displayed the most weakness and closed at $132.90. Feeders were also in the red, declining $0.90 to $0.92 on the day. Estimated week to date slaughter came in at 483,000 head, which is 12,000 head less than the same period last year. Boxed beef prices were lower on the day, with choice boxes down $0.89 at $202.41 while Select boxes were down $0.42 at $189.62. Cash cattle markets have been fairly quiet so far this week, but some small sales were reported in IA/MN on Tuesday at $132, and a larger sale at that price was recorded in Kansas earlier today. Some bids at that level surfaced in Texas, but offers are firm at $134. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $0.14 lower than the previous day at $165.22.
